December 1, 2013 — Have No Fear ... the End is Near!
In 1983 (six years before the fall of the Berlin Wall and eight years before the fall of the Soviet Union), the famous Russian author and Christian Alexander Solzhenitsyn won the Templeton award. In his acceptance speech he spoke openly about the evils that had befallen his Russian homeland. He said, “More than half a century ago, while I was still a child, I recall hearing a number of older people offer the following explanation for the great disasters that had befallen Russia: ‘Men have forgotten God; that's why all this has happened.’”
November 24, 2013 — A King Like No Other
Sympathy is a common human emotion. I have looked into the forlorn eyes of a stray dog and felt pity. At a funeral, I have looked into the eyes of a mourning family and wept silent tears. When I was only twelve, I cried when one of my best friends, Terry Olsen, died of cancer. And my guess is that you have wept as I have.
In our text, we see Jesus carrying his cross on the hard stones of the Via Dolorosa. Near him are a group of weeping women. They had looked into his eyes and had seen his great distress. They lamented the horrible death that awaited him. But turning to them, Jesus says, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.”
